Job Summary:

The Troy-Miami County Public Library is seeking a detail-oriented individual to assist the Collection Development & Technical Services Manager in copy-cataloging and other cataloging and acquisitions related work. Duties include carrying out library acquisition procedures, copy-cataloging and processing, entering materials in library ILS, and assistance with record and collection maintenance. This position also makes routine library technical assistance decisions. The work requires that the employee has good knowledge, skill, and ability in every phase of library technical support functions. The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational and problem-solving skills, excellent communication, a high level of accuracy and attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Receives library materials, unpacking materials from shipping containers and comparing packing lists with shipped items.
  • Prepares library materials for cataloging including donations, by locating records for materials and entering each item into library bibliographic database.
  • Assists in creating call numbers for materials using the Dewey Decimal Classification System.
  • Processes physical materials according to library procedure and standards.
  • Organizes and maintains the stock of cataloging and processing supplies.
  • Resolves routine problems in technical procedures.
  • Participates in inventory, mending, weeding, and deselection of materials.
  • Performs related and various tasks as assigned.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Good knowledge of basic library methods, techniques, and procedures.
  • Excellent verbal, listening, and written communication skills
  • Good knowledge of standard office and library machines and technology.
  • Good ability to maintain library records and carry out library procedures.
  • Considerable ability to pay attention to detail and maintain a high level of accuracy in all areas, ensuring accuracy of information and data integrity
  • Self-motivated, organized, efficient, and productive with excellent time management skills.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple and competing priorities in short-term and long-term objectives.

Education/Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous experience in a library preferred, emphasis on cataloging in a library.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

The work environment is typical of such climate controlled places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, and residences. Requires common safe workplace practices while operating office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, and correct lifting technique.

  • Ability to operate standard office equipment.
  • Ability to frequently use a keyboard, carry, hold, lift, reach, stoop, sit, turn, push and pull.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to push book carts with materials on them.
  • Ability to perform repeated reaching, bending, climbing and squatting.
