Job Description:
Under general direction of the Maker Lab Manager, the Maker Lab Specialist performs a variety of tasks assisting patrons with their DIY projects from initial concept to final product.
Essential Duties:
- Greets all users of the Maker Lab and fosters a welcoming, collaborative environment.
- Schedules equipment reservations for patrons and gives tours of the Maker Lab.
- Instructs and aids patrons in use of Maker Lab equipment and associated software; provides both one-to-one assistance and group instruction.
- Enforces safety protocols and maintains a clean, organized, and safe environment.
- Maintains, calibrates, organizes, cleans, and troubleshoots all equipment in the Maker Lab, performing simple repairs as applicable.
- Monitors use of consumable materials and tracks equipment usage.
- Plans, designs, promotes, presents, and evaluates Maker Lab programs for patrons of all ages.
- Plans/prepares displays, signs, or other materials for use across the Library system.
- Assists staff members with projects in support of other Library departments.
- Gathers statistics, prepares reports, and completes other projects as assigned.
- Keeps abreast of information by regularly reading email, minutes and staff website as well as attending staff meetings.
- Other duties as assigned by the manager.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
- Aptitude for operating and maintaining equipment used in the Maker Lab.
- Ability to communicate clearly and read printed and on-screen information.
- Ability to operate computers, laptops, tablets, printers, and multi-function devices.
- Ability to perform basic math functions to include adding, subtracting, dividing, and multiplying.
- Demonstrable knowledge and experience in DIY and making.
- Ability to calmly manage routine problems under guidance of manager and keep manager informed of departmental needs and concerns.
- Must be able to travel to other locations in the community.
Education & Preferred Experience:
- Associate degree from an accredited college or university, related technical certificate, or any equivalent demonstrable combination of experience and training.
- Wide-Format & UV Printers such as Roland Tru-Vis & VersaUV models
- High-watt laser engraver\cutters such as Eplilog Fusion Pro & LaserPecker
- CNC Router/Mill such as Shop Bot & Nomad
- Electronic cutters such as Silhouette Cameo
- Sublimation such as garment & clamshell presses
- Sewing/Tailoring such as sewing machine & embroidery
- 3D printing such as PRUSA brand
- Audio Recording such as PreSonus Studio, ATOM Pad, Mics, Amps
- Media Conversion (35mm, 8mm, flatbed scanner, cassette-mp3, VHS)
- Electronics soldering, desoldering, wire connectors
- Power and hand tools such as drills, saws, pliers, screwdrivers
- Software such as Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop/PDF, Canva, VCarve, Slicer, VersaWorks, Sawgrass CreativeStudio, and SVG, PNG graphic files
- 1-3 years of Customer Service experience strongly preferred.
Working Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Work performed requires considerable mobility, medium duty lifting, bending, stooping, stretching, standing, and sitting at a variety of work benches and desks.
- Lifting will require loading of 50+lb roll-type media into printers.
- Work environment is prone to odors, including cleaners and disinfectants, machine related odors, and will contain dust or other allergens.
- Must have sufficient clarity of speech and hearing which permit satisfactory communication with others in an environment with moderate noise levels.
- Working hours may be any combination of day, evening, and weekend.
