Job Summary:
Under the general direction of the Adult Programs & Services/Branch Manager, the Branch Associate provides excellent customer service to patrons of all ages and assists in the dayto- day operations of the library.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Performs general circulation desk activities which includes issuing library cards, collecting fees, processing holds and transfers, checking materials in and out, and shelving returned items.
- Offers assistance to patrons in locating requested materials.
- Develops, assists, and/or leads programming for children, teens, and/or adults.
- Opens and closes the library facility ensuring readiness to serve patrons throughout hours of operation and the security of the building upon closing.
- Instructs patrons in the use of online card catalog, the Internet, databases, self-check machines, and other library equipment, i.e. computers, laptops, copiers, etc.
- Maintains basic cleanliness and order of public and staff areas.
- Follows all safety procedures and policies.
- Keeps abreast of information by regularly reading email, the staff website and by attending all-staff meetings.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Knowledge of library materials, including digital services.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
- Basic computer skills including basic troubleshooting, using the ILS, MS Office, and the Internet required.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills required.
- A strong service ethic and customer service skills skills.
- Presentation, training, and program development skills.
- Ability to engage effectively with representatives of the community.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other library staff.
- Ability to alphabetize and file.
- Must be able to work some evenings and weekends.
Education/Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of some college courses desirable.
- Experience in a library setting a plus.
- Experience in educational or customer service role preferred.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
The work environment is typical of such climate controlled places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, and residences. Requires common safe workplace practices while operating office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, and correct lifting technique.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds (i.e. totes of books/materials).
- Ability to push book trucks with materials on them.
- Ability to perform repeated reaching, bending, kneeling, climbing and squatting.
- Requires regular participation and attendance at events and trainings.
- Requires ability to travel to off‐site locations.
