Job Summary:
Under the general direction of the Outreach Services Manager, the Outreach Associate drives the bookmobile and assists patrons during scheduled stops throughout the service area, supports special programs in the community and performs other day-to-day tasks in support of the Outreach Services Department.
Essential Duties:
- Drives bookmobile according to scheduled routes and stops.
- Rides the book bike to community events.
- Assists patrons in locating library materials and responds to reference questions.
- Provides basic information to bookmobile users about the available collection.
- Performs circulation duties; checking materials in/out, processing holds, collecting fees, etc.
- Assists in preparing teacher and deposit collections.
- Maintains the bookmobile and outreach van, keeping the interiors clean and in good working order.
- Assists in special program preparation and execution.
- Plans, prepares, and presents periodic storytimes.
- Creates displays and decorative items for the bookmobile.
- Leads/assists with activities related to summer reading program.
- Prepares "take and make" crafts and other activities.
- Prepares and delivers materials to patron homes and book lockers as scheduled.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Knowledge and skill necessary to drive the library’s bookmobile and van.
- Skilled at minor preventative maintenance and vehicle troubleshooting.
- Must have a clean driving record and able to be covered under library insurance.
- Knowledge of state and local driving laws and regulations.
- Familiarity with city and county streets and roads.
- Must be able to interpret and respond quickly to new or changed responsibilities and/or situations.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
- Excellent computer skills using the ILS, MS Office, and the Internet required.
- Knowledge and appreciation of library materials, including digital services.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong customer service skills are essential.
- Adaptability for scheduling requirements; able to work some evenings and weekends.
- Ability to communicate and work cooperatively with other library staff, professionals in the field, and patrons.
Education/Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Some college courses a plus
- Experience in a library setting desireable
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
The work environment is typical of such climate controlled places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, and residences. Requires common safe workplace practices while operating office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, and correct lifting technique.
Bookmobile operation will expose associates to varying outdoor climates/conditions.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to push book trucks with materials on them.
- Ability to perform repeated reaching, bending, kneeling, climbing and squatting.
- Requires availability for extended hours as needed, including occasional evenings and weekends.
- Requires regular participation and attendance at events and trainings
- Requires ability to travel to off-site locations.
