Library Newsletter WInter 2026

You may know the library saves you money every time you check out a book or audiobook instead of buying it, but did you know the library can also help you save money on other items? At Troy-Miami County Public Library, you can borrow a bike tool kit to repair your bike. You can borrow a vehicle code reader to help pinpoint what repairs your car may need. You can even check out a Milwaukee cordless drill or a radon detector. Visit our Library of Things page to see all of the items available and learn more! Have you ever wanted to learn a new language? You can with your TMCPL library card. Visit our Digital Library page and click on Mango. You will have to create a user account, but it’s worth it! You can choose from over 70 language courses. We also have access to other databases, such as the entire collection of Troy newspapers (1828-2023), available on Ancestry. At TMCPL, you can borrow museum passes! Scroll all the way to the bottom of the Library of Things page to see passes for the Armstrong Air and Space Museum, Dayton Art Institute, Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, and Carillon Historical Park! They are in high demand, so we recently added even more. Have you ever wanted to attend a painting class or a yoga class? You can go to the library for free. This past fall, we offered 364 programs between September and December. From yoga to painting to genealogy help, there was something for everyone, and they were all free! LIBRARY NEWS Troy-Miami County Public Library & Branches Winter 2026 From the Director’s Desk Warming Hands & Hearts at TMCPL TMCPL is pleased to share that our annual Giving Tree has returned for the winter season. The tree is stocked with hats, gloves, and scarves available for anyone who may need a little extra warmth. Patrons are welcome to take what they need—no questions asked. We also appreciate donations of new gloves, hats, or scarves to help us keep the tree replenished throughout the colder months. Start-up funding for this year’s Giving Tree was generously provided by the Friends of the Troy-Miami County Public Library. We are grateful for their continued support in helping us serve our community. From our Friends: Thank you to everyone who came out to support the Fall Book Sale! The Friends of the Library are grateful for both our enthusiastic shoppers and our hardworking volunteers. Your participation and generosity help us continue supporting library programs and services.

2 Rain, Terrain, and a Train The Local History & Genealogy Center and volunteers enjoyed good attendance at their Rose Hill Cemetery Walk. Despite rain on Tuesday, October 7th, causing the need to use the rain date of the 9th, the hilly terrain, and an ill-timed train going by, a crowd of about 87 individuals enjoyed the presentation on the lives of five past resident of Troy, who in a variety of ways left their marks on the community. The staff wishes to thank our volunteers and those in attendance. We always enjoy presenting a little history in this format. Look for our programming on the event calendar at www.tmcpl.org and join us as we explore and share our community’s rich history! Bookmobile at Bethel Elementary For the last several years the bookmobile has had the opportunity to visit Bethel's 1st grade classes. They’ve been learning all about mobile libraries, and what better way to learn than to step aboard one? Students explored the shelves, picked out their own books, and got a firsthand look at how our bookmobile brings the library to the community. Do you have a school, community location or event that would like a Bookmobile or Book Bike visit? Call (937) 573-2631 or email ssimon@tmpl.org to inquire. Outreach Services - On the Go! Dig into Local History New Book Recommendations: Patrick Kennedy, LHGC Archivist History Matters by David McCullough; edited by Doris McCullough Lawson and Michael Hill. (2025) For years readers were drawn into the world of the past by author David McCullough’s many biographies and event histories. From the Johnstown Flood and 1776 to John Adams, Theodore Roosevelt and the Wright Brothers, his writing was detailed and descriptive. Now one can take a small dip into his world via this slender volume containing select speeches, interviews and thoughts on how he went about his work. The Gales of November: The Untold Story of the Edmund Fitzgerald by John U. Bacon. (2025 This work comes just in time for the 50th anniversary of the tragic story from the Great Lakes. On November 10, 1975, a great iron ore freighter was caught amid a horrendous storm and sank, along with its crew of 29 men. The story, immortalized by Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, is now told in the most complete account to date.
