2 More than just books! Have you ever checked out a game from the library? Here are some top picks from our team! Kenzie: Jenga - "I grew up playing Jenga and have always loved it. It's a great game to bring people together!" Kell: Disney Matching - "Memory games are fantastic for brain development. This one is even better because it's Disney!" Jacqui: Puzzles - "I like doing puzzles because I like working with the different colors, the different shapes, and the different textures. It's always such a thrill to see it completed!" Gill: Apples to Apples - "It's a fun game that I play at home with my family!" Emmy: Guess Who - "It's fun to come up with funny descriptions!" We have all of these and more at the Pleasant Hill Library, including a sensory bag and an 18-inch doll with accessories available for checkout! Booking it Forward! Outreach Services partners with Jay and Mary's Bookstore to give children the gift of reading. Purchase a book at Jay and Mary's and donate it to the Book It Forward program. Our staff periodically stops in at Jay and Mary's to pick up donations. They are then distributed to local non-profits such as CASA-GAL, the Family Abuse Shelter, Partners in Hope, the Juvenile Probation Center, and other local organizations. During our most recent pickup at Jay and Mary's we were not only given donations of books, we were also given the remainder of a gentleman's gift card to purchase some books. This donation was used to purchase some board books for our littlest friends. Outreach Services - On the Go! Oakes-Beitman Memorial Library - Pleasant Hill Digital Downloads Did you know? Digital Content Holds Remember to check out our digital collection! Perfect for traveling, a busy life on the go, or simply the ease of reading on your phone or tablet, the Libby app hosts our large array of digital materials like e-books, e-audiobooks, and magazines, and Kanopy offers movies and more! If you have used Libby, maybe you have wondered why the holds list for popular digital e-books or e-audiobooks is so long? Just like a physical book, we are limited to purchasing each copy of a digital title. Unless the book has entered public domain by copyright lapse, like with Dracula or Frankenstein, libraries don't receive unlimited copies when we purchase a title. Digital content also costs more than physical materials so we have to adjust our purchasing to reflect this. Libby has some features that help the lists move a little faster, for example, by offering the delayed checkout option if a held title becomes available at an inconvenient time.
3 Breathe Easy Breathing exercises are an excellent method for alleviating stress and anxiety. What I like about using breathing techniques, is that it forces you to pause for a few minutes, which can offer you a sense of control in difficult moments. With a variety of techniques available, you can select the one that suits you best. I wanted to specifically highlight two common techniques that are quick and easy to practice." Box Breathing: Visualize a box where each breath represents one side of the square. Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of four as you imagine progressing up the left side of the square, hold your breath for another four along the top of the square, exhale for four as you move down the right side of the box, then pause for a final count of four to return to the start point. Continue for a few rounds, focusing on maintaining an even rhythm. 4–7–8 Breathing: Breathe in through your nose for a count of four, and hold your breath for a count of seven. Breathe out slowly through your mouth for a count of eight, aiming for a gentle, complete exhale. Repeat this sequence three to four times, allowing yourself to fully relax. Fun with Youth & Teen Services The Calm Corner - from our Library Social Worker How to Make Cloud Dough You will need: • One part lotion or hair conditioner • One part corn starch • A mixing bowl • A spoon • A space you can get a little messy! • Optional: food coloring Cloud dough is a simple, two-ingredient moldable dough that has the same consistency and texture of kinetic sand. When you hold it in your hands, it warms up and is soft. You can stretch it and shape it! When you leave it alone, it stiffens up and becomes hard! Instructions: 1. Put your lotion or hair conditioner in a bowl. If you want to use food coloring, put in a few drops now and mix. 2. Begin spooning in your corn starch and stirring it in a little at a time. 3. Continue adding corn starch until you have a dough! It should become stiff but still moldable. Use your hands to knead in the final spoonfuls of corn starch! 4. If it’s too hard, add more lotion or conditioner. If it’s runny, add a little more corn starch. At our library, we are fortunate to have the support of generous funders in our community who recognize the value of our work. Their contributions enable us to undertake projects that would otherwise be impossible due to limited state funding. The Troy Foundation made the Friendly Forest and new study room possible. The Ohio Department of Education funded the new audiovisual equipment in our two meeting rooms. The Friends of the Library fund our summer reading program. Ongoing initiatives, such as Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, receive funding from UVMC’s Community Benefits Fund and the Miami County United Way. Period products are provided through support from Period Kits Ohio, and the Children’s Hunger Alliance funded last summer’s meals for children. Even our new HVAC system—set to be installed in the coming months—was partially funded by a $500,000 grant from the state’s One-Time Strategic Community Investment Funds. Securing these funds requires dedicated staff willing to seek out opportunities, apply for grants, demonstrate the community’s needs to funders, and follow up on implementation. One such staff member is our social worker, who has worked with Period Kits Ohio for the past year to ensure that anyone in need has access to period products In Ohio, one in three low-income women report missing work, school, or similar commitments due to lack of access to period supplies and this includes our neighbors. Almost 10% of Miami County residents live in poverty. From the Director’s Desk Another one of these dedicated staff members is our Programs & Services Manager, who handled our summer food program. Last summer, through a grant from the Children’s Hunger Alliance, we distributed more than 22,000 meals to children. Some were surprised by the local need, but the numbers tell a clear story—more than 11% of all children in Miami County live in poverty, and during the summer, they lose access to free or reduced-price school meals. Families were deeply grateful to receive food in a welcoming, judgment-free environment. It took a dedicated team of staff and volunteers to handle food drop-offs, packing, and distribution each week. At Troy-Miami County Public Library, our management team alone has a combined 153 years of experience within the Troy library system. Many of our staff have also worked in other library systems, bringing invaluable expertise to our community. But none of what we do would be possible without the unwavering support of the people we serve. Get news from the library in your inbox!
